Xavi Over Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for Ballon d'Or – Johan Cruyff - Inside Futbol

Tuesday, 29th November, 2011

Dutch legend Johan Cruyff believes that it is Barcelona midfielder Xavi and not his team-mate Lionel Messi, or even Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, who deserves to win the Ballon d'Or.

Xavi finished third in last season's Ballon d'Or and, despite being included on the shortlist again this year, is expected to once again be overshadowed by Messi and Ronaldo.

But for Cruyff, it is not just individual talent that should be taken into consideration when handing out football's biggest playing award.

Indeed, the Dutchman thinks the team should be considered.

"It all depends on how you see football", said Cruyff, who built the "Dream Team" at Barcelona in the early 1990s.

"Xavi for me does not deserve it because he is the best, but because he is a player that makes a team in which others can develop."

At 31 years old, the time in which Xavi can finally win the Ballon d'Or is dwindling.

The midfielder has played 12 times in La Liga this season, scoring four goals.
