Real Madrid have revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo picked up an ankle injury in Saturday's 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid in La Liga.

The 26-year-old was on the receiving end of a lunge from Luis Perea during the match, but despite completing the 90 minutes, the club's medical team confirmed he suffered a Grade I sprain and contusion on his left ankle.

Madrid's official website revealed that Ronaldo did not participate in training on Tuesday, but instead worked with physios in order to try and shake off the knock.

However, there was better news for Kaka and Alvaro Arbeloa, who were both present in training after fully recovering from their muscular setbacks which forced them to miss the Madrid derby.

The Blancos travel to Sporting Gijon on Saturday, with kick-off at El Molinon scheduled for 17.00GMT.

Starting last week and continuing every Friday through to January, Goal.com will publish extracts from Graham Hunter's highly-anticipated book, Barca: The Making of the Greatest Team in the World. Friday's second extract was about how Joan Laporta and Sandro Rosell used David Beckham as a vote-winner in the club elections of 2003, even though a deal was already done between Manchester United and Real Madrid.
