Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo top list of world's most valuable footballers - A Different League

Brazilian consultancy agency Pluri has published a list ranking the most valuable footballers in the world, with the detailed study putting Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in first and second place. Messi is considered the most valuable at an estimated €100m with his Portuguese counterpart just behind on €90m.

Spanish football is particularly represented with eight of the country's 2010 World Cup winners represented in the 'Top 20': Andrés Iniesta is third (€65m), Cesc Fabregas fourth (€55m), David Villa seventh (€45m), Xavi eighth (€45m), Fernando Torres ninth (€42m), Gerard Pique 15th (€38.5m), Sergio Busquets 18th (€35.5m) and Xabi Alonso 20th (€35.5m).

All the players among the 'Top 20' form part of European teams with the exception of Santos striker Neymar who is sixth behind Wayne Rooney. The study reveals the strength of La Liga, although the data compiled does not reflect its health; 43% of Spanish league players in the full list come from Real Madrid and Barcelona, the most of any of the big championships across the globe.
