Schalke delivered a performance to make the rest of the Bundesliga sit up and take note on Saturday afternoon when they beat Werder Bremen by the commanding and deserved margin of 4-0. The visiting defence may well be in for a sleepless night after being given the runaround by Raul, in particular. The former Spain international scored three times. Goal number four was provided by Christoph Metzelder.

Schalke's starting line-up featured two changes from the side that drew 2-2 in Wolfsburg last week, Peer Kluge and Joel Matip getting the nod over Jermaine Jones and Ivan Rakitic in defensive midfield. And they and the rest of the Schalke rearguard were called into action almost immediately. The visitors created their first good chance with just 42 seconds on the VELTINS Arena clock when Hugo Almeida tested Manuel Neuer with a header from six metres from a Marko Marin cross, but the Germany No1 was alert to the danger and gathered the ball safely. The Royal Blues produced their first shot on goal after five minutes. Joel Matip won possession in midfield and slipped the ball to Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who directed his effort wide left of the Bremen goal from 20 metres.
With 12 minutes gone Petri Pasanen set up Aaron Hunt with a square ball in from the left, but the Bremen forward was unable to hit the target, shooting over from 12 metres. The home fans were nearly treated to a spectacular goal in the 21st minute when Huntelaar tried his luck with an overhead kick from a Farfan cross, but failed to make a proper contact. Sixty seconds later, however, the Schalke support did have reason to celebrate. Farfan delivered a pinpoint corner from the right onto the head of Christoph Metzelder, who produced a textbook header towards the Bremen goal. The ball struck the underside of the bar before hitting Tim Wiese on the back and rebounding into the net. It was Metzelder's first senior goal in a Schalke shirt.

Bremen almost found an equaliser from a dubious free-kick on 26, but Hugo Almeida's powerfully struck effort from 30 metres flew just past the left-hand upright. The Portugal striker threatened again four minutes later. This time the striker put his shot wide of the right-hand post from the inside left channel. It was end-to-end stuff now as Schalke immediately fashioned an opportunity for Raul. The former Spain striker got the better of the much taller Per Mertesacker in an aerial duel, but was unable to get any power on the header. The next decent chance of the game fell to Huntelaar on 39. Farfan crossed from the right and the Dutch marksman took possession of the ball in a goalmouth scramble, only to steer his shot just wide of the left-hand post.

The Royal Blues finally got their second goal in time added on at the end of the first half. Tim Wiese was unable to hang on to a fiercely struck Edu free-kick and Raul was the first to react, netting with aplomb to send his side in at the break two goals to the good.

Eleven minutes into the second half Raul added a third. The lively Farfan forced his way down the right yet again and delivered a cross to Huntelaar. Under pressure from Mertesacker, the Dutchman was unable to get the ball under control. Somewhat fortunately, the ball landed at the feet of Raul, who found the net with a crisp drive from nine metres. Just two minutes later Farfan should have made it four, but with just Wiese to beat, the Peru striker poked the ball wide of the left-hand post.

Schalke's hunger for goals was still not sated, however. On the contrary, Raul produced a sensational strike to make it 4-0 after 71 minutes. Daniel Jensen and Per Mertesacker failed to clear their lines with the necessary urgency, allowing Raul to steal possession before beating Wiese a delicate chip. Ten minutes from time Huntelaar almost added a fifth, but was denied by Wiese in a one-on-one. The Bremen keeper got the better of the Dutch striker again on 84, producing a fine reflex save to turn Huntelaar's header round the post for a corner.

The visitors caught the eye just once in the closing stages when Philipp Bargfrede picked up two yellow cards in quick succession, leaving referee Knut Kircher no choice but to dismiss the Werder youngster with five minutes left. The Bremen midfielder was followed off the pitch by the remaining 21 players soon after, ten of them with their heads down, eleven with smiling faces!
