Schalke seal Super Cup glory

Schalke picked up the first silverware of the German season as they beat Dortmund 4-3 on penalties in the German Super Cup.

After losing goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to Bayern Munich, cup winners Schalke turned to Ralf Fahrmann and it was a stunning debut for the 22-year-old as he saved two penalties after a goalless draw in normal time.

Dortmund saw early chances missed with Sebastien Kehl hitting the post and Mario Gotze and Shinji Kagawa shining in the final third, but Schalke also came close as captain Benedict Howedes showed his bravery to head over the bar and receive a clattering in the process.

Fahrmann though, was the star of the show as he kept out Kevin Grosskreuz and Robert Lewandowski, forcing penalties as the game ended 0-0.

The goalkeeper foiled Grosskreuz again to give Schalke the advantage and, after Jose Jurado put his side ahead, Fahrmann blocked from Dortmund's new signing Ivan Perisic to hand Schalke the cup.
"This win is very satisfying, it's super," said Fahrmann after the match.

However, Dortmund new-boy Ilkay Gundogan felt his side were to blame for the defeat. "I don't think Schalke deserved this'', he said. "It's been a long time since I saw so many chances wasted.''
