Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas suggests Fernando Torres will be dropped ... - Goal.com

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has suggested that misfiring striker Fernando Torres will be dropped to the bench again in the wake of the side's 2-0 League Cup defeat by Liverpool on Tuesday.
The Blues switched to a 4-4-2 formation for the quarter-final match in an effort to better suit the Spaniard, who made his first start in five games, but the Portuguese coach says he will return to his usual system for Saturday's Premier League clash with Newcastle – a move that is likely to see British football's most expensive signing going back on the bench.

"We're going back to 4-3-3 at Newcastle and Didier Drogba is showing good signs of returning," Villas-Boas explained to The Sun.

"Fernando has shown in the past that he has that ability and we will continue to pursue it. It must come with time and confidence but Fernando is facing tough competition.

"We still believe in him and we will continue to pursue his individual form.

"Our task as technical staff is to get the best out of the players. If we cannot do it, that's when we fail and we have to improve."

The £50 million striker, 10 months on from his move to Stamford Bridge from Anfield, has scored four goals in 15 matches for the Blues this season and has so far completed 90 minutes for Villas-Boas only twice.

FC Barcelona: David Villa Is Pleased to Be with Barca - Bleacher Report

David Villa talked about his role with Barca during a press conference that was covered on the FC Barcelona website today. Villa said that he was content with his role within Barca and the positive support from his teammates and management.

Villa continued to say that he does not allow himself to worry about what others say. The reason is that he plays so that Barca fans, players and management are happy, he said.

Villa commented about Barca's victory against Rayo Vallecano by saying that a victory was necessary after losing to Getafe. Villa concluded the press conference by stating that his declarations about Barca's opportunities in El Clasico were misunderstood.

Villa said that he had been trying to say that Barca can win, lose or draw in El Clasico, just like any other team in La Liga on any given day.

According to the FC Barcelona website, Barca has eight consecutive victories with 34 goals in favor and zero against. Barca has a winning streak of 11 matches at home without giving away a goal.

It remains to be seen whether FC Barcelona can maintain the momentum at home and in UEFA Champions League matches.

Operation Somalia: The U.S., Ethiopia and now Kenya

How vulnerable is Barcelona? - ESPN (blog)

ESPNsoccernet Press Pass: 29 November 2011

"Pulling back six points on Real Madrid isn't the greatest challenge I've ever had," said Pep Guardiola after a Saturday evening in the Spanish capital that left the champion trailing in the wake of Real Madrid by the largest margin since he took the reins at Camp Nou in 2008.

Barcelona found itself playing in the southern suburb of Getafe immediately after Real had dispatched Atletico 4-1 at the Bernabeu. At the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, meanwhile, Getafe achieved what no other side has this season and beat Barcelona. It was not esthetic, Getafe placing 10 men behind the ball, throttling Barca in midfield and scoring the game's only goal with its only shot on target. "The defeat is not terrible," said Guardiola. "There is plenty of league left to go."

[+] EnlargeGetafe/Barcelona

David Ramos/Getty ImagesGetafe's lung-busting effort against Barcelona -- challenging for balls, closing down space and, yes, parking the bus -- handed the Catalans their first league loss this season.

The problem facing Guardiola is that Getafe will not be the only side to shut up shop when Barcelona comes to town, so his team can expect to be similarly confined in stadiums up and down the country between now and May. Upon buying Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2009, Guardiola announced that the bashful Swede would provide Barca with a Plan B. It was an experiment with mixed results; Ibrahimovic was worth a goal every two games and provided several assists, but he never really fitted into the Barcelona system. With a Plan A that is so effective, it could be argued Barca needs no alternative route to goal, but the short-passing game can be stifled if the opposition has the tactical blueprint correct and, more importantly, the legs and lungs to carry it out for 90 minutes.

Another conundrum is Lionel Messi, to whom the team naturally turns when a spot of individualism is required. Prolific at Camp Nou, only one of Messi's 16 league goals this season has been scored on the road. Barcelona has won two, tied three and lost one of its six matches outside Catalonia.

Still, Guardiola can be excused for adhering to the tried and tested: The loss at Getafe was only his ninth in charge of Barcelona, and five of those came in his first season, when the Catalans won the title by nine points. In 2009-10, the margin was three points. Last season, the gap was four points. Barcelona's room for maneuver this season will be tighter still, with Real in the ascendency.

Jose Mourinho's team has won 13 consecutive matches with an aggregate score of 47-8. More importantly, it has done so playing both a possession-based game and by employing its lightening counter-attacks. "We've taken a big step forward," said Xabi Alonso. "We are on a great run, not just in terms of results but also in the way we are playing. We want to continue doings things well to have a better chance to win all of our games, starting with Saturday's [at Sporting]."

Mourinho has always said his second season at any club is his best, and the statistics so far this year back his claim: Real has scored 13 more, conceded one less and has one more win and two more points than this stage last term.

Barcelona reeled Real in by three points on Tuesday evening as it honored its week 17 fixture against Rayo -- a routine 4-0 win at Camp Nou -- ahead of the Club World Cup in Japan in December. In the corresponding round of fixtures, the final match day before the winter break, Real faces a tricky trip to Sevilla where the recuperation of those three points is far from guaranteed. The week beforehand, on December 10, is the first Clasico of the season, at the Bernabeu. Never since Guardiola arrived at Barcelona has Real been in a better position to exploit its great rival's weaknesses, and never has there been a better moment for Mourinho to display the veracity of his second-season success.

Cristiano Ronaldo is now getting his own Android game as well this December - DroidGamers

b_500_274_16777215_0___images_stories_news_ronaldofreestyle_Ronaldo-Freestyle-android-game.jpg

First it's Ex-Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho, who is getting his own game. Then right after that we reported on Manny Pacquiao getting his own game where he'll be handing out street justice, possibly as good as Chuck Norris once did. Now Cristiano Ronaldo is getting his own game too, called Cristiano Ronaldo Freestyle, from the same developer as the Jose Mourinho's game Mourinho Special One.

For those of you who follow Soccer (or Football depending on where you're from) then you probably already know who Ronaldo is. For anyone who doesn't follow the sport, he happens to be one of the more, if not one of the most, skilled players in the game today. Instead of Ronaldo's game being a game where he's actually playing soccer, it's more of a rhythm game where you'll be responding to on-screen commands. In doing this, he will be bouncing the ball around and doing little trick moves to the music that is play.

Features:

  • Choose from 5 gameplay modes including:
    • Hype Endurance: Perform hype tricks whilst juggling the ball to get the crowd's attention as quickly as possible
    • Time Attack: Get as many points as possible in the duration of the whole song
    • Freestyle Battle: Compete against an opponent for the camera's attention
    • Don't Drop the Ball: How long can you last without dropping the ball?
    • Freestyle Showdown: 15 seconds competition to prove that your better than your opponent
  • Earn achievements and unlock new items to fully customize your Cristiano Ronaldo character including shorts, T-shirts, shoes, sunglasses and even hairstyles
  • Shuffle Mode launches a level at random. Want a different level? Just reshuffle again to find one you like
  • Play soccer samba-style: make Cristiano Ronaldo move and dance to the beat while controlling the ball
  • 25 challenges in 6 unique world locations. Battle opponents with their own personality and style from England, France, USA, Japan, Spain and Portugal
  • Downloadable content, including two extra countries

Phandroid described it best by calling it "Dance Dance Football" as essentially that is what the game will be. This is being developed by Biodroid, the same company responsible for Mourinho's upcoming game this December. Ronaldo's game is already out on iOS and it'll be landing on the Android Market December 22nd for $2.99. It'll be more of a quick time killer type of game when you have a few minute here and there more than anything else but keep in mind that, like most DDR type of games, they can be addicting.

Not too sure about the music in this one though...

Heading too many footballs can lead to brain damage, experts reveal - Sydney Morning Herald

Heading too many footballs can lead to brain damage, experts reveal

Nicky Phillips Science December 01, 2011

TIM CAHILL built his career on it, Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the world's best, and Greece won Euro 2004 using the technique.

Heading a football may be an important skill for any player, but the action can also damage the brain in the process.

New research has found using your head to intercept a kick, make a pass or score a goal can lead to brain abnormalities similar to those seen in people with traumatic brain injuries.

American neuroscientists used brain images to compare the brain structure of 32 amateur male players, who averaged 30 years of age and had played football since childhood.

Those who performed heading skills most frequently had more significant changes to the brain's white matter, which is made of millions of nerve fibres called axons that transport the brain's electrical impulses, compared with players who preferred using their feet.

Scientists used specialised imaging, known as diffusion tensor imaging, to observe changes in the movement of water along an axon, a measurement known as fractional anisotropy (FA).

In healthy white matter, water movement is largely uniform and gives a high FA reading.

One of the study's authors, Michael Lipton, said abnormally low FA within white matter had been associated with cognitive impairment in patients with traumatic brain injury.

Players who performed between 1000 to 1500 headers per year had significantly lower readings than those who used the skill less. Previous studies have shown players who frequently used the technique performed almost 20 per cent worse in memory tests compared with those who did less heading.

''What we've shown here is compelling evidence that there are brain changes that look like traumatic brain injury as a result of heading a soccer ball with high frequency,'' said Dr Lipton.

''Given that soccer is the most popular sport worldwide … these are findings that should be taken into consideration to protect players,'' he said, when presenting his findings to the Radiological Society of North America in Chicago this week.

Eusebio says Messi rightful winner of 2011 Fifa Ballon d'Or - PanARMENIAN.Net

Eusebio says Messi rightful winner of 2011 Fifa Ballon d'Or

November 30, 2011 - 15:06 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net - Portugal legend Eusebio feels that Barcelona's Lionel Messi fully merits the title of best player in the world.

The diminutive attacker is one of the 23 players who have made the shortlist for the 2011 Fifa Ballon d'Or award, whose winner will be announced on January 9.

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo is also one of the favourites to win the prestigious accolade, but Eusebio says that his countryman falls short of the Argentine star.

"Who won the award [last year]? Messi? So, for me, Messi is the best," he told reporters. "Right now, the best player in the world is called Messi.

"There is no second-best, third-best or fourth best. Ronaldo, too, has won it in the past, but right now, Fifa and the people who voted chose Messi. He is a player who deserves this.

"I also agree with it, and Ronaldo himself accepted that Messi, this year, was better."

The 69-year-old, who represented Portugal from 1961 to 1973, then rejected suggestions that Pele is the best Brazilian player in the history of football.

"There was one player who was better than Pele," Eusebio explained. "It was Garrincha. He had one leg crooked, the other one straight, normal.

"How did he do all those things with such difficulties? He was a paralytic! And the way he played! Much better than us all!

"But since he was an ordinary guy and he liked to drink something that was not water, he was marginalised," Goal.com quoted him as saying.

'We convinced Kimi to come back' - Boullier

Renault team principal Eric Boullier believes his team's potential convinced Kimi Raikkonen to return to Formula One.
The 2007 world champion has signed a two-year deal with the team that will see him return to the sport after a two-year absence. Boullier said the news was positive for the team and proof that it was on the right track for the future.
"It is good news for the sport and of course it is good news for the team," Boullier said. "Strategically, it is good to have a big name, a high class driver and Formula One world champion to join us. He is committed to racing for us and he is definitely a very good character with the experience he has from driving for McLaren and Ferrari. Also, to have someone like Kimi signing with us shows that the package we have offered was good enough - we convinced Kimi to come back to Formula One!"
Raikkonen is adamant he has the motivation to make a successful comeback, but said his two biggest challenges for 2012 would be learning to use the Pirelli tyres and building up his neck muscles. There will be just three four-day tests ahead of the start of the season, but Boullier said Raikkonen will be able to hone his skills and fitness using the team's new simulator and a some runs in a 2009-spec car.
"First of all, in not so long we will have our simulator ready - this is good news for him and for us," he added. "I think that we will also be able to plan a couple of days with the demo car."
Boullier said Renault has plenty to be optimistic about heading into the winter break and that it would be bolstering its team ahead of next season.
"There are many things that the team will announce soon, in the coming weeks and the coming months," he said. "Let's not forget that the team's current identity is only a couple of years old and it is clear that we have made some strategic investments like the wind tunnel, like the CFD pole and like the building of the simulator- it will be a state of the art simulator.
"We are also in the process to reinforce our team with the recruitment of some key people, some of them have already joined us and some are to be announced soon but we can't say too much at this stage as some of them are currently on gardening leave.
"Next year, we will also have an upgrade of our facilities trackside, in fact it is going to be a complete change with a new engineers truck, a new infrastructure for the team garage, which of course will also have an impact on our image and obviously Kimi joining us is a big step in reinforcing the investment Genii Capital is putting in the team at every level."

Upbeat United ready for Chelsea test – Guthrie - Shields Gazette

DANNY Guthrie says Newcastle United can make a statement by beating Chelsea.

Guthrie and his team-mates take on Andre Villas-Boas's side at a sold-out St James's Park on Saturday.

Fourth-placed United are a point ahead of Chelsea – who were dumped out of the Carling Cup by Liverpool last night – in the Premier League.

Toon reveal tribute to Gary Speed

While Guthrie, pictured, believes it's too early for Alan Pardew's players to be talking about European qualification, he believes a victory against them will make the rest of the country take notice.

Newcastle claimed a point from Manchester United in their last game.

And that result has given them the belief that they can embark on another long unbeaten run, having gone 11 league games without defeat up to their loss at leaders Manchester City earlier this month.

Asked about the chances of Newcastle qualifying for Europe, Guthrie told the Gazette: "It's too early for that.

"But if we win (against Chelsea), then people start raising eyebrows, but we just continue taking each game as it comes.

"As I say, we're there on merit. We've been brilliant this season, losing one league game, and our defensive record speaks for itself.

"That's the basis of what we're doing, so long may it continue.

"We've always been confident. We went to Man City, and they won't play any better than they did that day – they are in top form.

"If we'd had some luck in that game, we'd have snatched something there."

Pardew's side were expected to struggle in the wake of the summer departures of Kevin Nolan, Jose Enrique and Joey Barton.

Yet they've prospered, the team spirit forged under Chris Hughton in the wake of relegation still intact.

"We're there on merit – we're a good team, and people are starting to realise that now," said Guthrie, who has played the last five games in the absence through injury of Cheik Tiote.

"Chelsea now's huge for us. We have a good run of fixtures coming up, and we know where Chelsea are at the moment. We need to get at them."

Detroit Pistons rookie Kyle Singler to sign for Real Madrid, according to ... - Washington Post

ALICANTE, Spain — Former Duke star Kyle Singler plans to stay in Spain rather than join the Detroit Pistons.

Singler was taken by the Pistons with the No. 33 pick in the draft. He's been playing with Spanish team Lucentum Alicante during the NBA lockout.

Alicante says it has agreed to sell Singler's rights to Real Madrid. The club says the forward will join Madrid once the NBA lockout is officially over.

Singler will play for Alicante on Sunday before signing with his new team on Monday after medical tests. Financial details were not released.

Singler joined Alicante in August and has been the league's top rookie, averaging 15 points.

We are a young team who want to achieve great things at Real Madrid and that requires a lot of work, trust and humility

Sergio Ramos
Quotes of the week

Also see

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos told Revista that his side is full of confidence ahead of the upcoming El Clasico against Barcelona.

The two rivals meet on December 10 at the Bernabeu with Madrid in a rich vein in form, going great guns under Jose Mourinho this season.

Los Blancos are the current pace setters in the Primera Division, a stark contrast to last term when Pep Guardiola's all-conquering Catalans walked away with the La Liga title, as well as success in the UEFA Champions League.

This time around, though, the balance of power has slightly shifted towards the Spanish capital and Ramos has spoken of the high spirits in the camp.

Asked about the qualities of this year's Madrid side, he said: "I would say the project and the mentality it brings, be it with the young or more experienced players.

"It's that union, that desire to achieve and keep adding to our CVs and in the end we are all seeing this in one another.

"We are a young team who want to achieve great things at Real Madrid and that requires a lot of work, trust and humility.

"It's a culmination of things but the key is to believe and understand the importance of the difficulty in achieving your goals."

Confidence

He added: "I'd say stability in the work and the confidence you have in yourself as a footballer, he [Mourinho] really gets the best out of you.

"He instils that character of success both into training as well as games, ultimately improving you as a player and a person.

"As a consequence there has been an immediate positive response from the squad."

Last season's El Clasico fixtures were often heated affairs, with the games often tainted by the number of cards dished out and the perceived dives from certain players.

Indeed, Ramos was sent off in the humiliating 5-0 defeat at the Camp Nou last November, but he claims that, despite the criticism, there will always be intense rivalries between the two teams.

"At the end of the day there are thousands and millions of people all with their own ideas. You can't please everyone and we respect everyone's opinion and above all football fans," he said.

"When you play in games like that in the Champions League and also in La Liga you need to always understand the situation.

"The nerves and tension that exist in each game are with players who we know in the national team of whom we get on with phenomenally well and whom we have friendships with.

"Ultimately, when you step onto the pitch you put those things to one side and you take it upon yourself to defend the badge. Which in this instance happens to be that of Real Madrid."

Villas-Boas says December key for Chelsea - SI.com

LONDON (Reuters) -- Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has targeted December's fixtures as being key to easing the unfamiliar anxiety at Stamford Bridge after a third defeat in four home matches.

Tuesday's 2-0 League Cup quarter-final defeat by Liverpool came hot on the heels of a Premier League loss to the same club and a 5-3 defeat by Arsenal to make fans twitchy at a ground that had been a fortress for much of the Roman Abramovich era.

"For our Premier League challenge to be alive we need to make the most of the December fixtures," the manager said on the club website (www.chelseafc.com).

"We play most of the top teams and that is our challenge for December. March and April can be as decisive, but as we play the top teams it's a fact."

Lying fifth in the league, they face a tricky trip to fourth-placed Newcastle United this weekend before hosting leaders Manchester City and travelling to third-placed Tottenham Hotspur later in the month.

To make things harder, they also host Valencia in a final Champions League group game aiming to avoid an early exit in the competition that Abramovich values more than any other.

"The Champions League is a life and death situation and we will need to up the tempo and play with desire," Portuguese Villas-Boas said.

In recent seasons a home match would be a comforting prospect for Chelsea fans, who had until now not experienced back-to-back defeats at Stamford Bridge since Abramovich bought the London club in 2003.

Villas-Boas can feel the tension in the air after overseeing the club's worst start to a season since the Russian's arrival.

"You can feel Stamford Bridge has become anxious when we play at home but we need their full support, it's the only way you can build the right atmosphere," he said.

"We have two big games at home now (Valencia and City) where we need the fans right behind us.

"Away from home we've been more solid, statistically and as a team. At the moment, when we play at home we've not been good enough, we need to get our fans behind us."

Villas-Boas has said he has Abramovich's backing despite the poor run, making media reports that his job is under threat seem premature, but if he does not turn things round in December then that speculation over his future will only grow.

Why Chelsea are a bigger Premier League icon than Manchester United - The Guardian (blog)

Busby Babes

Manchester United's global success is not synonymous with the Premier League – the Busby Babes were an icon in the 50s. Photograph: Keystone/Getty Images

We are in the 20th season of the Premier League, and Sir Alex Ferguson has been in charge of Manchester United for an astounding 25 years. Does that make his the most famous face in English football, or just the most likely to turn puce? If one were looking for a single iconic figure to sum up the Premier League years, ought it to be a manager in any case? Surely the people the world is watching are the players. So let's have a brief consideration of Premier League icons past and present, what it takes to be the ultimate icon, and why Chelsea might be more emblematic of the past 20 years of top tier English football than United.

There. I thought that would grab your attention. Clearly United have won far more of the Premier League shiny stuff than Chelsea, and there is no question that they are the most famous club in the country, and deservedly so. The EPL is a worldwide brand, however, that's why people writing comments at the bottom of this article keep referring to it as the EPL, and though I am not about to suggest that Chelsea have a bigger global fan-base than United or are more famous in other corners of the world, I do think they might be more iconic. Of the EPL, I mean. Because United have always been around, haven't they? They were iconic in the 50s and 60s, with the Busby Babes, Bobby Charlton and El Beatle. They are arguably even more famous now, although possibly not by much, but they predate the Premier League much too conspicuously to be synonymous with something only 20 years old.

So do Liverpool, one could argue, though since Liverpool's Premier League story is one of falling short of their previous standards, they cannot be considered EPL icons anyway. Like United, Liverpool are icons of English football, and their 2005 Champions League success was certainly emblematic of the virtues of English football, but once again their most famous storylines have been constructed outside the Premier League narrative, some of them even outside the Premier League era.

Whereas Chelsea, with due respect to the 1955 title-winning side and the famously entertaining era of Peter Osgood, Charlie Cooke and Chopper Harris, are almost entirely an EPL construct. They started grabbing headlines and attention in the early years of the Premier League, through Glenn Hoddle, Ruud Gullit, and Gianluca Vialli, but when Roman Abramovich moved in with his money, turfed out Claudio Ranieri and bankrolled José Mourinho, the EPL found its USP. That means the Premier League finally discovered what it was really good at, and began to do it better than anyone else in football history. To wit, spending colossal amounts of foreign money on foreign players who nevertheless provided value by coming up with results and excitement.

There is no way that what Mourinho achieved at Chelsea comes close to matching what Ferguson achieved at United – how could it, given the disparity in years in the job? – but what Mourinho achieved at Chelsea was a story that went round the world and was lapped up in every corner. The past, incredible, 25 years at United have been essentially an English story, or at least an Anglo-Scottish story, on a more impressive scale but still borrowing plot-lines from Busby and Bill Shankly. There was no real precedent for the Russian revolution at Chelsea. Rich men have backed football clubs before, but few so rich, and few with such immediate, spectacular success in a league that suddenly the whole world wanted to watch.

That is why my vote would go to Didier Drogba in a poll to find the most iconic Premier League player, even if his time in England may be drawing to a close. It has to be a foreigner, for a start, anything else would be less than honest. Drogba is a marvellous mix of ability, athleticism, bravery and brute force, with none too subtle undertones of pantomime comedy occasionally shading into high drama, and he's at the right club. We'll miss him when he's gone.

I do not say Drogba is a better player than Cristiano Ronaldo, or Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Gianfranco Zola, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Peter Schmeichel, David Silva or any of the other foreign players to have graced the Premier League, just that he is more instantly recognisable by a greater proportion of the world's population, which is more or less what an icon is supposed to be. The dictionary does mention something about the need to be uncritically admired as well as immediately recognisable, which would cut the above list to perhaps Bergkamp, Henry, Silva and Zola, but we are talking about footballers here, not religious icons, and you would have to go a long way to find anyone who did not enjoy watching Drogba's famous bit of stage business with Jens Lehmann a few years ago.

Obviously there are English icons too, take your pick from David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Alan Shearer, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney and a few others, plus assorted Welshmen in Ryan Giggs and Gareth Bale, but half of those are shy, retiring types and the most conspicuously recognisable has worked almost as hard on his recognisability as he has on his football. It may seem perverse to overlook Beckham in an evaluation of anything iconic, though it should be remembered that, though a Londoner, Beckham deliberately attached himself to United in the first place. Before the advent of the Premier League and because of their iconic status. Whether that makes him more or less iconic than George Best in their respective eras is the subject for a debate on another day, but Drogba does not come with any such complications. You just can't miss the Chelsea striker.

I remember watching him play for Marseille against Newcastle and thinking he was made for the Premier League. Mourinho must have agreed. He's not subtle, but he's great viewing. Like the EPL himself, he never hides. He is big, obvious and available. On the pitch, that is, I didn't mean to liken him to a sitcom barmaid. Although he has been known to resemble a big girl's blouse.

Real Madrid's Jose Mourinho has built a legacy in world football, says former ... - Goal.com

Former Brazil international Paulo Roberto Falcao has stated that Jose Mourinho has created his own legacy in the game, and that his Real Madrid are much better than they were last season.
The 58-year-old has been watching the Santiago Bernabeu outfit train this week, and is full of praise for their Portuguese coach.

"Mourinho is a very experienced coach and a great competitor," the ex-midfielder told Marca.

"He is used to winning, and has built a legacy in world football. What he did with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and now Real Madrid shows the great ability of Mourinho to win."

The capital city side are currently three points clear of arch-rivals and Primera Division holders Barcelona at the top of the standings, and Falcao feels that Los Blancos have improved over the last 12 months.

"Real Madrid have managed to be even stronger this year and more solid. Mourinho made them very good last season, but this is an important year. The team is very good.

"It is not easy to score lots and concede few. He has a great balance between attack and defence; this is what all coaches seek," he stated.

Madrid's next fixture is against Sporting Gijon on Saturday, as they look to maintain their advantage at the top of La Liga.

Arbeloa not thinking about Barca - ESPN

Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa insists that his side are not thinking about the form of their title rivals Barcelona and can only focus on their own performances.

Alvaro Arbeloa

GettyImagesAlvaro Arbeloa is focused on his own efforts.

Madrid are three points ahead of Barcelona at the top of La Liga and have a game in hand, while the Catalans face the distraction of the Club World Cup in December. Jose Mourinho's men play their next match away at Sporting Gijon on December 3 and Arbeloa is focused on the task at hand, rather than an upcoming El Clasico the following weekend.

"I am not thinking about what Barcelona do. I don't have time for them. I have plenty to think of at Madrid. We should not look at Barcelona, Valencia or any other team," he told AS.

"The season is still long. We have to be patient, because there are many more games to be played. We have not won La Liga yet and still have a long way to go. It's not important how many points we're ahead right now."

Meanwhile, midfielder Sami Khedira believes the team still have room for improvement and that competition for places in the squad is a good thing.

"Regardless of whether it is Mourinho's second year [at the club] every team is better in their second season together,'' he told German website Spox. "When a new coach arrives, with a new system of play, what is needed, above all, is time.

"Now we are much more finely tuned but still as hungry. Besides, we are more than a team and that helps us enormously. We want to win more trophies than last season.

"At Real Madrid there is always great competition to play. That applies to every position and is normal at a club like this. In the defensive midfield position there are four or five world class players. That's how it was last season and nothing will change in the future.

"The only thing you can do is to give everything in every game, and I think that is something that up to now I have done well."

Real Madrid midfielder Kaka will not leave Spain for PSG or Chelsea - GiveMeFootball.com

Reported Chelsea target and South American superstar Kaka has absolutely no intention of leaving Real Madrid according to his agent.

The 29-year-old midfielder has been heavily linked with the Santiago Bernabeu exit door after struggling to cement his place in boss Jose Mourinho's first-team line-up for much of the season.

Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas has been credited with an interest in the Brazilian playmaker, with speculation suggesting Chelsea are prepared to pay £30million in order to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

However, latest reports now say that mega-rich Paris Saint Germain are the frontrunners for his signauture, as they look to make an audacious bid to tempt him to join them.

Having already spent upwards of €80million on new signings in the summer, the Ligue 1 outfit certainly have the financial backing to challenge Chelsea for Kaka's services if he is even available in January following Gaetano Paolillo's recent comments.

"Kaka is a member of my family and I can say that he feels very good at Real Madrid," he stated.

"PSG are interested? I think that interest from clubs like that is normal, but he does not want to leave Real Madrid and wants to show that he is number one."

Chelsea 0-2 Liverpool - Morning Star Online

He had just laid on his second assist of the evening to cement Liverpool's place in the semi-finals of the League Cup, but was in sombre mood and his mind was elsewhere. For the Welshman this was a special moment, a moment to pay tribute to his former mentor Gary Speed.

The strength of character shown by Bellamy to pull on the Liverpool jersey just three days after Speed reportedly took his own life warranted a man-of-the-match award alone. To produce a faultless, Speed-like, display that culminated in two assists was simply extraordinary given the circumstances.

His superb creative skills were put away by Maxi Rodriguez and Martin Kelly in a stunning five minutes of football from Liverpool as the game approached the 60th minute.

The visitors could even point to a first-half penalty miss by Andy Carroll such was their dominance over a lacklustre Chelsea.

The game represented the 30th time the two giants of English football have met since 2004. But in contrast to their familiarity with each other the opening stages were reminiscent of a blind date.

It was all rather polite as both sides introduced themselves into the game with some tidy yet unimaginative possession football, and no-one was going in for the kill.

The game did finally threaten to burst into life when Carroll spurned his chance of glory from the penalty spot mid-way through the half.

An excellent Luis Enrique cross was deemed to be handled by Alex as him and Carroll tussled for the high ball. After much deliberation, the England striker stepped up like a man who had only scored two league goals this season and although striking his penalty firmly it was far too close to the diving Ross Turnbull.

The game had a more of a cup-tie feel to it in the second period, triggered by some tireless midfield play by Liverpool's Brazilian workaholic Lucas. Reports that his father is a Duracell bunny and his mother Paula Radcliffe are yet to be confirmed, but should not to be ruled out.

His drive and enthusiasm set the platform for the visitors to bag two quick-fire goals and Bellamy produced the quality.

Apparently the League Cup is seen as worthless to Premier League clubs, but try telling that to the 4,000 Liverpool fans who sent the roof into orbit at the Shed End when Rodriguez latched onto Bellamy's perfect centre to open the scoring.

And just as the roof was returning to earth, it was sent back to whence it came as defender Kelly powered a header into the top corner five minutes later for his first goal for the club. That man again Bellamy provided the assist from a free-kick after he had drawn the foul by Ramires just outside the area.

Kenny Dalglish has never lost to Chelsea in 12 matches as manager of Liverpool and rarely did the hosts look like salvaging anything from this game to buck that trend.

The legendary Reds boss was full of praise for his inspirational Welshman in the aftermath.

"Craig is a fantastic footballer who had a hugely disappointing day on Sunday," he said. "He regarded Gary Speed as a mentor. It was great for the wee man, making the first goal. For the second he took the free-kick. He told Martin to leave it, it was going in!

"I don't know if we took Chelsea apart but we were delighted with the way we played. We've had a good day and we deserved to go through."

Spurred on by the remarkable Bellamy, the visitors showed everything that winning a football match requires — desire, work-rate, professionalism and moments of quality.

The man looking down on his former pupil would have been immensely proud.

Ronaldo doubtful for Gijon encounter - FOXSports.com

Updated Nov 30, 2011 6:32 AM ET

Real Madrid have a slight injury doubt over Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of this weekend's Primera Division clash with Sporting Gijon.

A statement on Madrid's official website confirmed the forward had suffered a sprain and contusion to his left ankle and sat out Tuesday's training session.

Ronaldo picked up the injury in a challenge with Luis Perea during Saturday's 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid. The Portuguese scored two penalties in the victory and was able to complete the full 90 minutes.

December key to easing Chelsea anxiety - Villas-Boas - Moneycontrol.com

REUTERS - Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has targeted December's fixtures as being key to easing the unfamiliar anxiety at Stamford Bridge after a third defeat in four home matches.
