33rd Federation Cup: A look back at the tournament

The 33rd edition of the Federation Cup (India's version of the FA Cup) was held from September 17 to 29 in Kolkata and Pune. Salgaocar emerged as champions yesterday by beating twice defending champions East Bengal Club 3-1 at the Saltlake Stadium in Kolkata.

The Federation Cup is India's premier national knockout tournament, but this years competition will surely not be remembered as one of the best. The timing will have been a major issues for most clubs as it came as sort of pre-season tournament and some teams looked under-prepared.

The most of all preliminary groups was Group A were the Shillong sides Lajong FC and Royal Wahingdoh SC upset their more famed rivals in record champions Mohun Bagan AC and Goan giants Churchill Brothers SC. Otherwise the group stage went mainly as per plans as the favourites won the three other groups.

Salgaocar SC were deserving champions as they were the most consistent of the participating clubs with especially their defence being rock solid and conceding only one goal throughout the tournament, a penalty in the final against East Bengal.

Salgaocar's Chidi Edeh and Henry Antchouet from Churchill Brothers SC top-scored in this edition of the Fed Cup with four goals a piece.

I-League: Regional Broadcast partner announced

The All India Football Federation and their marketing partners IMG-Reliance have signed a season deal with Brand Value Communications Limited, the owners of channels News Time Bangla and News Time Assam, as the regional broadcast partner of the 2011/12 I-League for the states of West Bengal and Assam, but the search for a national broadcaster continues while regional broadcast partners in other regions then East and Northeast India are also being sought after.

As per the deal Brand Value Communications Limited would televise upto 75 matches of the upcoming I-League on its two channels and it is the second such deal between Brand Value Communications Limited and IMG-Reliance in weeks after they had worked out a deal for the just concluded 33rd Federation Cup earlier this month.

The value of the deal has not been disclosed by the two parties, but it surely will bring in some much needed funds to IMG-Reliance to refund their investments into Indian football.

The 14 team I-League is set to kick-off on October 22 with 182 matches to be played until April/May 2012.

William Gallas Suffers Fresh Injury Defender Set To Miss North London Derby.

Bologna president hopeful over NBA star Bryant deal

Bologna president Claudio Sabatini says he is hopeful a deal can be worked out to bring NBA star Kobe Bryant to Italy despite the two parties remaining a way apart over economic matters.

Bologna have made an offer to the 33-year-old in the hope of bringing him to the club either for a handful of matches or for the whole season should the NBA lock-out continue.

And while Sabatini acknowledges their original offer was some way off Bryant's financial expectations, he believes a deal can be reached.

"We were also working on this last night, there was a positive exchange with his agent," Sabatini told SkySport.

"There are differences to overcome but we want to tie-up this contract."

Bryant spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport and gave encouraging signs as to his interest in such a move.

"It's very possible, it would be a dream for me. There's an opportunity and we're talking about it at the moment," said Bryant.

"It's very possible and that's good news for me.

"Italy is my home, it's where my dream of playing in the NBA was born.

"It's here that I learnt the fundamentals, I learnt to shoot, to pass, to move without the ball.

"These were all things that on my return to America the kids my age didn't know how to do because they were concentrating only on jumping and dunking."

Bryant spent eight formative years in Italy while his father played over here following the end of his own NBA career with the Houston Rockets.

Bryant speaks fluent Italian and says he wants to buy a house in the country.

But it is his stated ambition to play in Italy that has pleased Sabatini.

"I want to thank Kobe for his words, he showed he's a champion off as well as on the court," said Sabatini.

"We've made a huge offer, there's still a big difference but we're ready to approach his economic demands because it would add value to the whole country.

"Everyone agrees that Bryant's arrival would give confidence to and provide a huge boost to Italian basketball.

"The championship starts on October 9. We're hoping for a reply which will be close to a precise proposal with a contract that requires just the signatures from both parties."

Bulls’ Rose ponders playing in Europe

CHICAGO — Fresh off a vacation to Bora Bora with his mother, Brenda, Derrick Rose said Tuesday that if the NBA lockout drags deep into the season, he will consider playing overseas.

"Yes, I am taking into consideration that I might move overseas," Rose said. "I don’t know where. There are a lot of great places overseas. I haven’t really had time to get the details of every place."

Rose said he has one concrete offer from an undisclosed foreign team and a source close to Rose said several others have inquired about his services. The source stressed those opportunities would be pursued only if regular-season games get canceled and labor talks break down for an extended period.

As of now, the first two weeks of training camp have been the only casualty of the NBA lockout, which began July 1.

"It’s kind of weird knowing that I don’t have a job right now," Rose said. "I haven’t felt this way from high school. It’s all positive, though. I’m hoping the season starts no matter when. Hopefully, I don’t have to go overseas.

"I do miss talking to the people at the Bulls organization, my coaching staff. I miss that. But it’s not stressful or anything. I’m not panicking. I’m taking my time."

Rose spoke on the renovated playground at Murray Park, the South Side basketball court where he first honed his skills in pick-up games. A bevy of Rose’s sponsors, spearheaded by Powerade, began renovations on the court in May with the aid of the Chicago Park District. The spiffy unveiling Tuesday included Rose talking to 100 select children, who each received gift bags from Adidas, and answering questions from them before posing for group photos.

"Just coming back here, I know it means a lot not only to me but the community," Rose said. "If I was younger, I think it’d be cool for a guy who made it before me came back to show he appreciates us and didn’t forget about us. Every day, every time I play, they’re the reason I play, this neighborhood right here. This court is what brings everyone together. People have picnics, barbecues up here. It means a lot to this neighborhood."

And Rose vowed to continue spreading a positive message about his neighborhood.

"This is only the base," he said. "You never know in a couple of years not only me but what some other people can do for this neighborhood. I’m looking to change it. People look at Englewood as a bad neighborhood. But it’s everything to us."

Rose rued the potential damage an extended lockout would have on the fans. Until it ends, he planned to resume workouts in Santa Monica, Calif., his home base for a busy offseason that has included extended promotional trips to Europe and Asia. His popularity particularly in the Far East has reached rock star levels.

"It’s a blessing," he said. "I’m only 22 and I’ve seen almost half the world at a young age. I don’t take it for granted at all."

33rd Federation Cup: Salgaocar's are champions!!!

Salgaocar Sports Club are the champions of the 33rd Federation Cup. In the final played tonight at Kolkata's Saltlake Stadium the Goans beat defending champions East Bengal Club 3-1 in a good match of football.

Both coaches took a gamble with their starting eleven making numerous changes. Salgaocar coach Karim Bencharifa brought on Elijah Obagbemiro Junior in place of Ryuji Sueoka as well as Ishfaq Ahmed for Gilbert Oliveira and Tomba Singh for Mehrajuddin Wadoo. His East Bengal counterpart Trevor Morgan benched Tolgay Ozbey to bring in Penn Orji like Raju Gaikwad for Nirmal Chetri; but the big surprise was the return of midfielder Mehtab Hossain, who had to walk off in the first few minutes as the gamble did not pay off.

Salgaocar made a perfect start into the game as striker Chidi Edeh gave them a 5th minute lead through a header. Thereafter an open game developed, but Francis Fernandes shocked the home side with Salgaocar's second goal in the 18th minute when he beat Soumik Dey on the right wing, his first-time shot is blocked by Sandip Nandy but Francis scores of the rebound. East Bengal reduced the deficit in the 26th minute when referee Santosh Singh gave them a penalty after Luciano Sabrosa brought down Penn Orji. Once more Alan Gow stepped-up and send Karanjit Singh the other way. The longer the first session lasted the more the red-and-gold took control of the match and in the last 10 minutes they put Salgaocar under sustained pressure. A good first session ended 2-1 in favour of Salgaocar.

After the break East Bengal continued to attack the Salgaocar goal, while Salgaocar relied on counter-attacks. The red-and-gold did create some chances but Salgaocar under the able guidance from Luciano Sabrosa was able to avert the danger. Salgaocar sealed the match in the 66th minute through a strike from substitute Ryuji Sueoka following a Chidi Edeh shot was blocked by Sandip Nandy, but once again the East Bengal keepers block went to an opponent teams player for a goal. After the third goal East Bengal looked out of ideas to get back into the game as Salgaocar coolly played out the remainder of the match to be crowned deserving champions of the 33rd Federation Cup.

After the final whistle it was party time for Salgaocar's as the players and officials celebrated their success. The club captain Luciano Sabrosa then received the winners check of Rs 2,5 Million (25 lakhs) from the AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das.

With Salgaocar SC already qualified for Asia as the I-League champions, the AFC Cup spot went automatically to East Bengal for reaching the Fed Cup finals.

North-East Premier League on the cards

To further promote club football across the Northeastern states the All India Football Federation is working on plans with the regions state football associations to launch the North-East Premier League. Kolkata-based Celebrity Management Group is set to partner the AIFF to organise and raise sponsorship for the league.

The NE Premier League is set to feature the top teams from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura along with a team from Sikkim. It will be an eight team league. The format has not been finalised yet, but the AIFF is pushing for a start during the ongoing 2011/12 season.

It has been decided that a clubs participating squad could include upto three foreigners, but it would be mandatory to have no less than six local players and the same number of Under-21 players. The rest of the team could be from anywhere in India with no Northeast restrictions.

From this set of players the three foreigners, two local players and one Under-21 would have to be in the starting eleven, while also having such a combination amongst the playing eleven throughout the game.

The aim of the league is to not only promote club football in the North-East, but also talent from the region and bridge the gap with the rest of the country.

Scandal in Munich, Tevez refuses to come on as a sub

Argentinian footballer Carlos Tevez is no stranger to controversy and last night in Munich he once more proved that point to perfection. But what had happened?

English Premier League side Manchester City are guests to German Bundesliga giants FC Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night. Manchester City coach Roberto Mancini's side are 0-2 down and with about 35 minutes of play left he wants to make a substitution to strengthen his attack. The Italian wants to replace an off-colour Edin Dzeko with a fresh Carlos Tevez, but the Argentinian refuses for unknown reasons to come on. A verbal argument on the bench starts with other players also seen to be involved, while the substituted Dzeko is angry and says some words towards his coach.

The match ended 2-0 for Bayern Munich and a dejected, disappointed Roberto Mancini was open and honest to the media at the press conference and in the mixed zone. The Italian tells the media that Tevez refused to come on and that his time at Manchester City is over, for once and for all. Meaning if no mediator is involved as long as Mancini is coach Tevez will not play for the Citizens.

"If I have my way he will be out. He's finished with me," the Italian said after the match.

"If we want to improve as a team, Carlos can't play with us. With me, he is finished."

After the incidence Tevez tried to carry out damage control as he blamed "confusion on the bench" for the "misunderstanding" in a statement on Wednesday unlike his coach about the substitution, not that he didn't want to come on.

The reactions all around have been harsh, but I would say if the incidence has been reported correctly then Tevez is at fault why people are questioning him and his action. Tevez needed security in Manchester on the return from Munich as angry fans were gunning for his head.

It will be interesting to see how Manchester City solve this problem, then the only option now with them is to sell or loan Tevez in January 2012 to end this saga, which will over the long run hurt the ambitious club.

Hamilton drive attracts 40,000 in India

Over 40,000 fans turned out to watch Lewis Hamilton demonstrate a McLaren on the streets of Bangalore on Tuesday.

Hamilton drove his 2008 world championship-winning MP4-23 along the NICE road as part of the build up to the inaugural Indian Grand Prix on October 30, before carrying out a Q&A for the fans. Hamilton said he was "overwhelmed" by the number of fans lining the streets after the run, and that he could feel the anticipation building ahead of the race.

Sunderland Star Titus Bramble Arrested On Suspicion Of Sexual Assault

Sunderland ace Titus Bramble has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and possession of a class A drug and the 30-year-old centre-back to who can played in the Sunderland's 2-1 defeat at Norwich on Monday night is a currently being questioned by police and is in custody in Stockton-on-Tees.

33rd Federation Cup: Grand Finale on the Cards

The grand finale of the 33rd Federation Cup will be played tomorrow at the Saltlake Stadium in Kolkata with I-League winners Salgaocar SC taking on defending Fed Cup champions East Bengal Club. An interesting contest is on the cards between the two sides who fought closely for the I-League title last season. It is also a match-up of master tacticians Karim Bencharifa from Morocco and Englishman Trevor Morgan.

For East Bengal it will be the rare chance of winning a Fed Cup treble, which has only been achieved by archrivals Mohun Bagan between 1992 and 1994. The red-and-gold had earlier won the 2009 title in Guwahati and 2010 in Cuttack. A win at home in Kolkata would complete their East India treble. Overall it will be their 15th final having won the title on seven occasions.

For Salgaocar it will be their seventh final and if they win their fourth title. The last time they won the title in 1997 against East Bengal at the Saltlake Stadium. So 14 years on it means same opponent, same venue. The result in 1997 had been a 2-1 win and a repeat this time around would make Karim Bencharifa surely a happy man.

Both sides have had a mixed Federation Cup. East Bengal won their Group C with a 1-1 draw against Mohammedan Sporting and then wins against Pune FC (2-1) and Dempo SC (1-0). In the semifinals they somehow scraped through 2-1 against Prayag United SC. While Salgaocar SC drew their opening game goalless against Mumbai FC but then won convincingly against HAL (4-0) and Pailan Arrows (3-0). In the semifinals they needed a last minute Chidi Edeh goal against Shillong Lajong FC to move into the final.

The red-and-gold are set to miss influential midfielder Mehtab Hossain due to a groin injury while youngster Raju Gaikwad is also sidelined, but Trevor Morgan will welcome Robin Singh back from a suspension. The question will be who will fill in for Mehtab, then so far Trevor Morgan hasn't found a suitable replacement who can guide the team from the middle of the park, but what has been on East Bengal's side throughout the tournament is luck.

What makes Salgaocar so strong at the moment is the fact that they haven't conceded a goal so far in the tournament. Karanjit Singh has rarely been tested in goal with solid defence lead by Brazilian Luciano Sabrosa, while further upfront Chidi Edeh and Ryuji Sueoka will be needed to score.

With Salgaocar SC already qualified for Asian continental competition as the I-League champions, the AFC Cup spot for winning the Federation Cup automatically goes to East Bengal for reaching the Fed Cup final.

The Final will kick-off at 18.00 IST at the Saltlake Stadium, Kolkata. DD Sports along with News Time Bangla and News Time Assam will be broadcasting the final match live.

Huub Stevens returns to Schalke 04

German Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04 have appointed Dutchman Huub Stevens as their new coach following last weeks surprise resignation of Ralf Rangnick due to burnout.

Stevens returns to Gelsenkirchen for a second stint with the royal blues after having coached them between October 1996 and June 2002. During his nearly six years in-charge Stevens won the UEFA Cup in 1997, the biggest success in the history of the Ruhr valley club. Since then Stevens is a fan favourite and they look forward in getting their old coach back.

"I've worked here for six years, it's not just any club," said Stevens on Tuesday at a press conference to announce his return.

"Once Schalke, always Schalke - I am happy to be back here," he added which sums up the mood at the club.

Before coming to Schalke in 1996 Stevens had coached the PSV Eindhoven Under-19s, Roda JC Kerkrade. After leaving Schalke he worked for Hertha BSC Berlin, 1.FC Cologne, Roda JC Kerkrade, Hamburger SV, PSV Eindhoven and Red Bull Salzburg.

A elated Director of Sports Horst Heldt said, "We said, during these difficult times, let's bring Huub Stevens back home."
