Traumhafte Kulisse. © F. Rasch

(fr)

The Turkish Grand Prix has been dropped from the 2012 Formula One calendar, which was confirmed by the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) on Wednesday.
The definitive calendar also confirmed that the US Grand Prix has been shifted to the penultimate race of the season in November, while Bahrain, which had been scheduled as the season opener, will now be the fourth round after the initial flyaways in Australia, Malaysia and China.
But the biggest news is undoubtedly the loss of the Turkish Grand Prix, which has struggled to draw crowds since its inaugural race in 2005 and has been in doubt for several months. The race organisers had been in discussions with Bernie Ecclestone to extend the contract, but the WMSC's approval of the latest calendar has ruled it out.

A draft calendar had been leaked earlier this year with the Indian Grand Prix ahead of the European season, but that has now been moved to the end of October (similar to its position on this year's calendar).
There will be six sets of back-to-back races with the season finishing with a double-header in the USA and Brazil.

Miami Heat: 7 Players to Replace Mario Chalmers at Point Guard

With Hinrich's $8 million contract set to expire at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season, the Hawks would be wise to pursue a trade for the veteran.

Jeff Teague finally stepped into his potential and blossomed last year, looking like he was ready to fill the role of full-time starting point guard for Atlanta.

From Miami's perspective, Hinrich brings the exact combination of cerebral play, shooting skills and experience that are all necessary on a club that has its sights set on securing a championship.

LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant Send Message with Exhibition

Back when time was young, summer ball—no, not random Ron Artest sightings in the Vegas Summer League—was an integral part of NBA player culture. Pro-am leagues offered them a chance to cut loose and show off their creative sides.

At the same time, in the 1960s and early 1970s, All-Stars often found themselves matched up against players who could, or should, have been in their position. Scouting was primitive, opportunities far more scarce and the league itself had far fewer spots. Street cred, as it were, was a double-edged sword.

It’s been a while since summer run meant much of anything. Some pros still make celebrity cameos at the Rucker, and in D.C., Gilbert Arenas and Kevin Durant made the Goodman League part of their offseason itinerary. Los Angeles’ Drew League and Houston’s Fonde Rec Center were also favorite haunts for NBA players. Mostly, though, it was a diluted version of the olden days. Kobe Bryant or Vince Carter wowed fans in an intimate environment, helping burnish their brand; guys looking for a relatively competitive game knew where to find one.

Former NBA player arrested in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, Aug 29, 2011 (AFP) - Former Lakers player Javaris Crittenton was arrested on Monday in Los Angeles and could face a murder charge in connection with the shooting of an Atlanta woman.

FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said Crittenton was arrested at John Wayne Airport while trying to board a Delta Air Lines flight bound for Atlanta.

Prior to his arrest, Crittenton was best known an for being suspended by the NBA for an argument involving guns in the Washington Wizards locker room.

Police arrested Crittenton for the alleged shooting of Jullian Jones, 22, earlier this month. Jones was walking with two men when she was shot. Police believe one of the males was the intended target.

Crittenton pleaded guilty in January 2010 to a misdemeanor gun charge and received a year of unsupervised probation, following the 2009 locker room incident.

Crittenton and teammate Gilbert Arenas had argued over a card game on a airplane flight and a couple of days later Arenas showed up in the dressing room with four guns that he placed in front of Crittenton’s locker. Crittenton then grabbed his own gun. No one was hurt but NBA commissioner David Stern suspended Crittenton for 38 games.

Crittenton was a star player at Georgia Tech University where he played one season before deciding to leave college early and turn professional.

The Lakers drafted him with their first pick in the 2007 NBA entry draft. But the Lakers traded him less than a year later to the Memphis Grizzlies in the deal that brought Pau Gasol to Los Angeles.

Crittenton headed to China in December 2010 to play for the Zhejian Guangsha of the Chinese Basketball Association but lasted just five games before being cut by the team.

Denver Nuggets free agent Wilson Chandler is planning on playing in China during the 2011-12 season, a report said Monday, where he will be reunited with his former NBA coach Jim Cleamons.

ESPN sports said that the 24-year-old Chandler will suit up for Zhejiang Guangsha of the Chinese Basketball Association, as the NBA lockout drags on.

Earlier this month, Chinese basketball officials said free-agent NBA players would be welcome if the league's stoppage continues, but they would be forced to play an entire season in China.

Spain looking stronger than ever

BELGRADE, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Packed with talent and experience, holders Spain look stronger than ever as they head into the European championship in Lithuania as favourites to retain their title and qualify for next year’s Olympic Games.

Six of the 12 players in Spain’s roster ply their trade in the NBA, including Los Angeles Lakers power forward Pau Gasol and new acquisition Serge Ibaka, an Oklahoma Thunder forward who was granted Spanish citizenship last month.

The Congolese-born Ibaka, who played in the Spanish league for three years before moving to the United States in 2009, was brimming with confidence after Spain, described as pundits as Europe’s “dream team,” won seven of their eight warm-up matches.

“I can already see myself playing the final because we are looking good,” Ibaka told reporters after Spain completed their build-up with a pair of emphatic wins over Australia.

“Everyone is motivated and for me it’s a living dream to play with one of the best forwards in NBA history,” said Ibaka, referring to Gasol who won the 2010 NBA title with the Lakers.

Ibaka’s inclusion has added more depth to the already menacing presence Spain have in the paint, where Gasol’s younger brother Marc and veteran Felipe Reyes should constitute a wall for most of their rivals.

Their back-court looks just as impressive with point guards Ricky Rubio and Jose Calderon set to carve out clean-cut positions for Juan Carlos Navarro and athletic forward Rudy Fernandez, two of Europe’s most lethal perimeter shooters.

HUGELY POPULAR

Still, having lost to Serbia in the quarter-finals of last year’s world championship in Turkey, Spain will be wary of underestimating any of the other medal contenders in Lithuania.

With only the winners and runners-up qualifying automatically for the Olympics, Spain know that any slip-up will once again be fatal in the Aug 31-Sept 18 tournament.

Hosts Lithuania were the only team to beat Spain in the build-up to the European championship and the frenetic home support will add more wind to their sails.

Basketball is hugely popular in Lithuania, a Baltic nation of 3.2 million who won two successive European titles in the late 1930s before, having re-emerged as an independent nation following the break-up of the Soviet Union, a talented generation clinched the third in 2003.

Lithuania will play the Spaniards in the opening stage, featuring four groups of six teams, but both nations are likely to be among the top three in each group who advance.

The second stage is something of a phoney war as it features two groups of six with the top four in each group progressing to the quarter-finals, where the real business begins.

The whole knockout stage will be played in the impressive Zhaligiris Arena in Kaunas with a capacity of 15,442.

Lithaunia’s coach Kestutis Kemzura, who guided the team to a third-place finish in the 2010 world championship, acknowledged his weakened team would have to play stronger defence to challenge for a podium finish on home soil.

“Last year, we had (forward) Linas Kleiza who was scoring 20 points per game and (guard) Jonas Macilulis but they are not with us and we are still struggling,” Kemzura said after a drubbing by Slovenia in last Friday’s friendly.

“We have to step up our defence and if we can stop our rivals from scoring more than 70 points, we’ve got a chance.

”We had a stronger team spirit in Turkey but I don’t want to complain because we have good players here who need to learn to fight together as a unit and, to do that, winning the opening game against Great Britain will be vital,“ said Kemzura.

DARK HORSES

Britain, already qualified for the Olympics as hosts, are unlikely to make an impact in Lithuania but facing Europe’s top sides should be a useful experience for the team whose outstanding player is Chicago Bulls forward Luol Deng.

France, on the other hand, could figure as the tournament’s dark horses if they advance from the toughest group in the preliminary stage also including Italy, Germany, 2009 runners-up Serbia, Latvia and Israel.

The French have an outstanding starting five led by triple NBA champion Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs, but lack of depth on the bench could be a setback during a gruelling schedule of 11 games in 19 days for teams which reach the knockout stage.

Germany, champions in 1993 and bronze medalists in 2005, will rest their hopes on talismanic power forward Dirk Nowitzki, who led the Dallas Mavericks to a memorable 4-2 win over the Miami Heat in last season’s NBA finals.

Nowiztki, a versatile and unselfish team player who overshadowed Lebron James in the final series, is also capable of acting like a one-man army when the going gets tough for his team mates against stronger and more talented rivals.

Those traits will be vital if Germany are to finish ahead of a strong pack chasing either a medal or a top-six finish, which secures an Olympic qualifying berth in next year’s playoffs.

It includes Italy and Greece, who both have two European titles to their name, 2007 winners Russia and 2001 champions Turkey, as well as all six nations from the former Yugoslavia.

Serbia appear to be the strongest in that contingent, but Croatia and Slovenia also have respectable squads capable of reaching the latter stages of the tournament.

Montenegro, playing in their first major tournament as an independent nation, are an unknown quantity while Bosnia and Macedonia will start as underdogs along with Poland, Belgium, Bulgaria, Portugal, Finland and Ukraine.

Heat’s Joel Anthony auditions on world stage

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — This is Joel Anthony’s alternate reality, where he is his team’s star, is allowed to shoot the ball, feels the weight of the moment.

For the Miami Heat centre, it also is somewhat of an audition, to prove he is up to such moments, to show that the Heat may already have their starting center for 2011-12, that Pat Riley may not need to pursue the likes of a Samuel Dalembert on the free-agent market.

As he spoke from Foz de Igaucu, Brazil, where his Canadian national team was wrapping up a warm-up tournament in advance of Wednesday’s start of Olympic qualifying in Argentina, the shot-blocking defensive specialist mentioned how he feels a world away from his day job, as a supporting player to LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

The 29-year-old native of Montreal is coming off an appearance as a starting center in the NBA Finals, which far trumps the pedigree of Canada’s only other NBA players, seldom-used New York Knicks guard Andy Rautins and San Antonio Spurs first-round pick Cory Joseph, the guard out of Texas.

To put in perspective how different this current universe stands, consider that in exhibitions this past week against Brazil and Puerto Rico, Anthony attempted seven and six shots. Then consider that in his 75 appearances this past season, he did not attempt more than five in any game.

"It’s definitely helped me," he said of receiving freedom to further his game, "because, realistically, it’s not something I’ll be able to do with Miami in the NBA, just because of the talent we have. To be able to get that and develop more as a player, I think it’s really important.

"Pretty much the biggest thing is to try to bring some of those aspects to Miami from my international play. That’s one of the biggest things that I’m trying to focus on, so I can help my team a lot more when I get back to Miami."

There is, however, a more immediate focus, namely securing one of the two 2012 Olympic berths available at this week’s FIBA Americas Championships in Mar del Playa, Argentina. His team, ranked No. 23 in the world and without an Olympic appearance since 2000, enters a decided longshot, considering the struggles during the just-concluded warm-up tournament in Brazil, where the overmatched Canadians went up against Carlos Arroyo and J.J. Barea in a loss to Puerto Rico and Al Horford, Francisco Garcia and Charlie Villanueva in a game against the Dominican Republic. A more likely goal is finishing within the top five, which would place Canada in a last-chance qualifier next July in advance of the London Games. (The United States, which won last summer’s World Championships, has an automatic Olympic berth and is not participating in the Americas tournament.)

While the sting of falling to the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals resonates, so does going winless with the Canadian team in last year’s World Championships.

"It was really tough having the performance that we had last year," said Anthony, who finished fourth in blocked shots at the 2010 World Championships in Turkey. "It was really tough. I know we’re definitely a better team than what we showed last year. I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to perform on a big stage in this qualifying, looking to place well enough to give ourselves a chance."

And then he’s looking forward to the end of the lockout and the opportunity to compete for the starting job he seized during the middle of last season’s playoff run.

"Obviously, after the Finals I looked toward this summer to improve a lot more because I feel there’s a lot I have to do to be able to help this team," he said of the Heat. "I have to improve as a player. That’s really my biggest focus right now; that’s what I’m trying to lock in on."

IN THE LANE

MATTERS OF SEMANTICS: For those who forget, when LeBron James offered his somewhat lamentable prediction upon signing last summer of eventually winning, "not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, not six, not seven..." championships with the Heat, the criticism was nearly as loud as the AmericanAirlines Arena cheers that greeted his prediction. Then came the Finals loss to the Mavericks and Dallas center Tyson Chandler chiming in, "I hear they do things big in Dallas. There can’t just be one — two, three, four, five..." Then, this past week, Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose, the player who replaced James as reigning MVP, said in an interview with HoopsHype.com, "There’s not a doubt in my mind that I’m not going to win a championship. I’m going to win multiple championships. It’s not a doubt in my mind." Out of mockery apparently grows mimicry.

LEBRON, TOO: It was a big week for all things LeBron, including Detroit Lions wide receiver Nate Burleson offering a mock LeBron powder toss after a touchdown in a road exhibition against the Cleveland Browns. "It was a LeBron thing. I wasn’t going to do it. See, I had a plan. I had two celebrations planned. I was going to catch the ball, get up, do the shot by (Michael) Jordan and the three pumps," Burleson explained to the Detroit Free Press, alluding to Jordan’s heartbreaking playoff clincher against the Cavaliers in 1989. "I’ve got it all down. I’ve seen it like a million times. But then when I got in the end zone, I was waiting for the ref, and then when I looked at the crowd, the Dawg Pound went crazy. They were cussing me out, talking about my mama, so I was like, ’Forget that. Where’s the powder at?’ Voom!" Burleson acknowledged the Twitter response was not pretty.

MISSED OPPORTUNITY: A staple in the wake of championship series has been overvaluing in free agency those coming off significant contributions. In that respect, Mario Chalmers may have missed his opportunity to cash in due to the lockout. Chalmers not only was the only Heat player beyond Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and James to average double-figure scoring in the NBA Finals, but shot 14-of-35 on 3-pointers over the six games against the Mavericks and regained his starting job by series’ end. But now, the long view may instead be of a player who shot 43.5 percent over the playoffs, with 44 assists to 48 fouls and 28 turnovers. Chalmers spent the past week working out at the University of Miami with a group that included Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Joe Johnson, Jarrett Jack, Morris Peterson, James Posey, Jannero Pargo and Joey Dorsey.

GREATER EXPOSURE: Chalmers also is scheduled to return to his alma mater Sept. 24 for an exhibition game at Allen Fieldhouse featuring Kansas University alumni, including Paul Pierce, Nick Collison, Drew Gooden, Kirk Hinrich, Cole Aldrich and Brandon Rush, among others.

OH, THAT TATTOO: If you haven’t seen it, the recently expanded tattoo on Chris Bosh’s back has drawn worldwide review. Yes, even during the Heat forward’s recently completed tour of China. Asked about the somewhat bizarre artwork, Bosh replied to a questioner in China, "I mean it’s, umm...I like art. You know, so it was pretty much just a collage of everything that I like and a lot of it, all of it has meaning. A lot of history. My history, it’s my history. Everything has, you know...it’s not done yet. It’s a work in progress, so people are, ’Oh, what’s that? It’s ugly.’" A follow-up questioner asked if the collage might eventually include artwork of a championship trophy. "Yeah, I mean, it worked for Jason Terry," Bosh said of the Mavericks guard. "I might as well do it, too."

NUMBER

11. Number worn by Heat center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, which apparently will be retired by the Cavaliers, who declined to make it available to No. 1 overall pick Kyrie Irving per his post-draft request. Irving instead will wear No. 2. Irving wore No. 11 in high school and No. 1 at Duke (with Daniel Gibson currently wearing No. 1 for the Cavaliers).

VIDEO: Messi arrives in Kolkata, but no show to fans & media

Here a report filed by NDTV from the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Airport in Kolkata on the arrival of Lionel Messi in the City of Joy or rather the anticipation from fans of his arrival.

Messi-Mania in Kolkata as the superstar arrives

The little Argentinian maestro Lionel Messi landed in Kolkata in the early hours of the day to end speculations if he would be coming for an international friendly to be played against Venezuela on Friday evening at the Saltlake Stadium.

And as one would expect there were a few thousand fans with the entire local and national media present to get a glimpse of Messi, but as one would expect he got his immigration and customs work done and was whisked away through a separate entrance.

"I can only say that Messi is in town," said Bhaswar Goswami, executive director of Celebrity Management Group.

The hype around Messi's visit to the City of Joy has been building for weeks and it was geared up towards the arrival of one of the world's best current footballers. Sometimes one feels that Lionel Messi could have come on his own, shown some of his tricks and that might have been enough rather then a full international friendly between Argentina and Venezuela.

However Messi and his Argentina team mates are now in Kolkata with a likely visit to Mothers Teresa's on the cards besides some pre-match training, but the media shy Messi might not give Kolkata what they would expect from such a superstar. So hopefully for the fans they will get to see on the field, live in their own backyard what Lionel Messi is all about - class football...

August 31: Most important Day in Football Calendar?

Today is August 31, the final day of the summer transfer window in European club football. Some call it the most important day of the European football calendar with a number of clubs frantically trying to get transfers done before the midnight deadline when the transfer window closes until the winter transfer window in January.

While some clubs hope to lure their targets from other clubs at the last moment, there are other clubs who are looking to strengthen their squads after weak starts to their campaigns in their domestic leagues, while others are trying to offload excess players from their roaster and wage bills.

Friends who are Director of Sports, managers and agents say these are the busiest days of the year; then even clubs who have settled teams sometimes can suddenly be forced to look for options due to injuries or other reasons.

And if one follows those running tickers of major football websites and newspapers it is often really interesting and sometimes even surprising what kind of deals go through at the last moment.

So enjoy the day and follow the transfers...

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney wishes Hargreaves luck

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney would have no qualms with Owen Hargreaves joining Manchester City for a stating he wishes the midfielder 'luck' and the former Red Devils man, who was released by the club over the summer could be on the verge of a move to Etihad Stadium as he is believed to be undergoing a medical.

Hargreaves was signed from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich for a lofty fee in May 2007 and the despite early good form his tenure was ultimately heavily disrupted by a succession of injuries for a 30-year-old has been proving his fitness for this summer and now it seems that United's city rivals are willing to take a punt on a Canadian born star, if fit, was regarded as world class and rooney knows Hargreaves well following their time at Old Trafford and the England ace would not begrudge him a move to a City having seen how hard he has worked to regain full fitness.

Worked hard for a rooney is been out for a couple of years now and he worked hard to try and get back, explained Rooney to Sports News and a lot of the time he was over in Germany or the States trying to get fit and We didn't really see much of him for he came back he came close to playing and he played one game and unfortunately he got another injury to his hamstring.
He is nice lad and he is a worked extremely hard to try and get back playing and the manager felt that he didn't want to keep hold of him and i wish him luck for the hopefully he gets back playing and when he's fully fit he's a great player for he is a different type of midfield player to what we have had in England and we all hope as England players and fans that he gets back to his best.

Götze: Dortmund turn down 40M Euro offer from Arsenal

As I have written in my blog before German teenager Mario Goetze is one of the brightest young talent currently plying his trade in the Bundesliga. And as one would expect the young international Mario Goetze has attracted interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Now the first real bid has come in which club Borussia Dortmund have turned down outright. English Premier League side FC Arsenal had last week made a 40 Million Euros (appro. 35 Million Pound) bid for the BVB starlet which the club did not entertain as they say, Goetze is not for sale.

Borussia Dortmund won the German Bundesliga title last season with a young team which plays attractive, attacking football and they will want to build on that to be a force in German football in the years to come.

Especially an offer from Arsenal, who happen to be in the same group as Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League, is something which the Ruhr valley would not like to entertain.

And Goetze is at a stage of his young career where he needs to focus as his red card against Bayer 04 Leverkusen over the weekend showed even a young, cool headed player like him might not always be able to cope with pressure.

Wayne Rooney Is Looking To Help England Secure Maximum Points Six Points From Their Upcoming Euro 2012 Qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales.

The Three Lions' bid to reach Poland and Ukraine next summer resumes this week with a tricky looking away game in Bulgaria on Friday and england are currently level on points with Montenegro at the top of Group G having garnered 11 points from their 1st five qualifiers.

Fabio Capello's side are eager to fend off Montenegro's challenge for top spot and Rooney wants 6 points from six in their next 2 fixtures in a really tough game and the bulgaria away good atmosphere, he told sports news and a difficult game to come away with the 3 point that's got to be our game to get the 3 points there.

Wales are a good team but we like to think we have got enough to beat them at the home for a hopefully we can come away from these games with 6 points rooney is joined in the England squad by a Manchester United team mates Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Tom Cleverley and  have all impressed this season.

Rooney linked up with a England camp in red hot form after his weekend hat-trick against Arsenal and he is looking to impress after not featuring for his country since their 2-0 win over Wales in March for always great in a good form and scoring goals he added, for hopefully that form can continue in the next 2 games and i am looking forward to getting back playing for England and hopefully do well and the helping us get the points that we need.

Button takes to the streets of Manchester for demo run

Fresh from his podium finish in Belgium at the weekend, McLaren's Jenson Button journeyed to Manchester on Monday to give locals a thrilling taste of Formula One power. The demonstration run was part of a three-day event organised by the team’s title sponsor Vodafone.

Despite damp conditions, thousands of spectators turned out to line Deansgate, one of the UK city’s busiest thoroughfares, to watch the Briton in action. And after the bustle of Deansgate, the temporary track turned down John Dalton Street and into Albert Square, where a kart track, an F1 simulator and an exhibition of race suits and helmets were based for visitors to enjoy.

“(It’s been a) great day in Manchester,” said Button on his official Twitter site. “I still can't believe how many people came to watch! Amazing crowd!! Hope you all enjoyed the show.”

As well as putting an F1 car through its paces, Button also found time to sign autographs, answer questions from the crowd and meet up with England cricketer Michael Vaughan, boxer Amir Khan and gymnastics champion Beth Tweddle. He even gave one lucky enthusiast a ride in the British team’s new MP4-12C road car.

Button will be back in action in more typical surroundings next week at the Italian event, which takes places at Monza from September 9-11.

FIA announces Monza double-DRS

There will be two detection points in Italy © Getty Images

The FIA has announced that there will be two separate DRS zones at Monza for the Italian Grand Prix.
So far this season the majority of the circuits have seen only one DRS zone during the race, with the grands prix in Canada and Valencia seeing a double zone on consecutive straights. On those occasions there was only one detection point, meaning only the following car can use the DRS in either zone.
In Italy, however, there will be two separate zones with two separate detection points. The first will be on the start finish straight with the detection point on the exit of Parabolica, while the second will be in between the second Lesmo and the Ascari chicane and will have a detection point between the two Lesmos.
After the Belgian Grand Prix, McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh said that the DRS had worked well, and that it is a style of racing that the fans want to see and will enjoy again in Italy.
"I think that if you could [use] DRS you could get by," Whitmarsh said. "I think overall, people want that. FOTA did the most extensive fans survey - whether I believe it or want it - the fans want more overtakes. Jenson [Button] did some mighty overtaking round the outside and from a long way back, and I suspect for the fans it was fairly spectacular.
"Once you got past a car with DRS, unless you broke the DRS link he was likely to get you back the next lap. People talk wondrously of about 35 years ago slipstreaming at Monza - before my time - but people seem to like that, so I think DRS worked well."
