Glorious Barcelona wins UCL over Manchester United

Total joy for every cule fan. Barcelona played a game for the ages, a near-flawless Final that saw it defeat reigning English, European and world champion Manchester United, 2-0, to win the desired UEFA Champions League.

Showing yet again why it is regarded as the most spectacular football team on the planet, Barcelona put on a display of ball-possession and passing skills that left Manchester mesmerized.

Manchester Boss Alex Ferguson's footballers, who were trying to become the first in 19 years to successfully defend their European title, were left chasing shadows. Twice, the shadows escaped and punished them. The goals came from two continents away.

The first, in the 10th minute, was provided by Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o, who danced past defender Nemanja Vidic and fired a shot from close range that went in off the hand of Manchester United's Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

The second, in the 70th minute, was scored by Argentina's Lionel Messi, who soared high into the air and headed Xavi's pinpoint cross into the back of the net, with Van der Sar nowhere near the ball.

It was the third triumph for Barcelona, which also won the trophy in London in 1992 when it still was known as the European Cup, and in Paris in 2006.

This Barcelona team, however, is a class above even its illustrious predecessors. Combining self-belief with skill, talent with tenacity, it has swept all before it in the 2008-09 season, netting a record haul of goals in the process.

With Wednesday's victory, Barcelona achieved what no Spanish team before it had done, completing the triple by winning Spain's Primera Liga, the Copa del Rey, or King's Cup, and Champions League.

It achieved all that under 37-year-old rookie boss, Josep "Pep" Guardiola, a former Barcelona ball boy and a starter on the 1992 European Cup-winning team.

Messi and company held sway throughout. The Argentine star, the tournament's top goal scorer, is now almost certain to take over from United's Cristiano Ronaldo as the FIFA world player of the year.

The celebratory scenes inside the Olympic Stadium were bittersweet for the Manchester United supporters, who had watched their team triumph in Moscow only 12 months earlier.

It was a commanding performance by Barcelona. After the final whistle, “Titi” Henry paraded around the stadium with the trophy on his head.

"I've been waiting so long to get this title," Henry said to a Britain TV Channel. "The last five minutes were the longest of my life. You never know what can happen. We were playing against the best team in the world."

Manchester United had come back from the dead to snatch the European Cup from Bayern Munich's grasp in 1999. This time, however, Ferguson's team, despite the second-half addition of Carlos Tevez and Dimitar Bebatov to an attack that already featured Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, had nothing left in the tank.

The loss ended the Red Devil's record 25-game unbeaten run in the competition. "It was a killer first goal and they used it very well," Ferguson stated. "We have to accept we've been beaten by a better squad."

Manchester United beaten at Champion League 08/09

United was thoroughly outplayed by a Catalan side which had already won the Spanish league and cup titles, and at the Stadio Olimpico the loss could well have been heavier than 2-0.

By the end of a largely one-sided game, only one team could go home saying it looked like the best team on the planet and it wasn't United.

Relegate Team

GOodbye West Brom, MIddlesborough and Newcastle.
They will relegate to Championship next season..

A deflected first-half goal from Gareth Barry ended 16 seasons of Premier League for Newcastle United as Aston Villa picked up a 1-0 home win.

A spirited Sunderland performance saw them lose out in the fixture but stay up anyway, in truth the Black Cats' performance merited a place in the top flight. Nicolas Anelka grabbed the first with a fine individual goal just after half time, Sunderland equalised through Kieran Richardson before Chelsea won the game with goals from Salomon Kalou and Ashley Cole. Kenwyne Jones headed home a late consolation goal.

Hull City Stay Up Despite Defeat To Manchester United
United’s youngsters had too much for the Tigers but results elsewhere means Brown’s men are safe.

There was to be no Middlesbrough miracle at Upton Park, where goals by Carlton Cole and Junior Stanislas sent Gareth Southgate's side plummeting through the relegation trap-door.

Antonio Valencia to Madrid ?

Antonio Valencia's agent has confirmed Spanish giants Real Madrid have made an offer for the Wigan Athletic winger.
The Latics are resigned to losing the Ecuador international and should recoup a fee of around £21m for the midfielder, with Manchester United also believed to be battling it out for his services.

Wigan boss Steve Bruce has openly admitted the 23-year-old will move on in the summer and Madrid have been long-term admirers after attempting to lure him to the Bernabeu last January.
Herrera said with interest in his client from some of Europe's biggest clubs it was now difficult for him to stay at Wigan. "Wigan revealed last week that there has been an offer from Real Madrid but they haven't told me any details about it," Herrera told PA Sport.

Aston Villa skipper Martin Laursen has announced his retirement because of persistent injuries. The 31-year-old defender has endured an injury-plagued career and has been out of action since suffering a knee injury while playing for Villa in January. Laursen was faced with a lengthy rehabilitation period on his right knee before he would return to full fitness and has opted to retire rather than undergo another major operation.

The 31-year-old's retirement will leave a huge void to fill in the Villa defence as he has been one of the club's most consistent performers in recent seasons.

Manchester United eye historic football record

Manchester United eye historic football record
Manchester United's forward Dimitar Berbatov celebrates with team-mate forward Wayne Rooney, top, …

Manchester United are five games away from an historic season and veteran winger Ryan Giggs feels Sir Alex Ferguson's side are hitting form at exactly the right time.

With the League Cup and the Club World Cup already won, United can look forward to a Champions League final against Barcelona on May 27 and need seven points from their last four games to secure an 18th English Premier League title.

Sunday's derby with Manchester City will be their 63rd game of the season but after their back-to-back defeats to Liverpool and Fulham in March, United have responded with an impressive run of form.

They have won five matches in a row going into the game with Mark Hughes' team at Old Trafford.

While United are on course for more silverware, City's expectations have increased considerably since they were taken over by the Abu Dhabi United Group in September and they are continuing to battle for a Europa League place.

Despite being well into the 10th month of their campaign, veteran Giggs thinks United's energy levels are high.

Giggs said: "At this part of the season you want to be involved in big games all the time - and we are.

Chelsea faces punishment

UEFA will decide "in the course of next week" what disciplinary action to take against Chelsea for their behaviour toward the referee after Wednesday's contentious Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.
The Blues had four penalty claims turned down during the 1-1 draw, which saw Barcelona through to the final, and European football's governing body confirmed on Friday that they had received match reports from referee Tom Henning Ovrebo and their match delegate detailing the angry scenes that followed the final whistle.

Four Chelsea players could face individual charges.
Didier Drogba is facing the stiffest sanction following his lengthy confrontation with Ovrebo on the pitch and in the tunnel, although his public apology may lessen any punishment.

Michael Ballack could also be charged for running 40-yards to confront the Norwegian referee after the fourth penalty appeal was turned down during the game - an act for which he was yellow-carded.

Chelsea full-back José Bosingwa faces sanctions for describing the official as a "thief" who was "bought", although he has since retracted those comments, while skipper John Terry also criticised Ovrebo as emotions ran high at the end of the semi-final.

Frank Ribery to Manchester United?

Is it true that Frank Ribery will come to Manchester CIty??
According to Raphael Honigstein who writes for the Guardian and the Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Manchester United has launched a £63m bid for Bayern's Frank Ribery. The deal depends on whether Cristiano Ronaldo will move to Real Madrid in the summer.
This will made Ribery the favourite to become football's new record breaker as local rivals Manchester United and Manchester City went head to head to sign the Bayern Munich forward, whose recent comments intimated that life isn't all beer and bratwurst at the Bundesliga club.
Ribéry moved to Bayern in 2007 from the French side Marseille for around €25 million, and although his contract is due to run until 2011, he’s thought to be looking for another club. Ribéry has made no secret of his willingness to leave Bayern, especially if the team fails to qualify for next seasons Champions League.

Info: Franck Ribery from France celebrates after scoring goal.

Ribery to arrive at Old Trafford for £60 million? You must be joking

£60 million for Ribery? Come on. It's never going to happen.

One English newspaper has today reported that Manchester United have today made a massive £60 million bid for Bayern Munich midfielder Franck Ribery.

The French playmaker is widely regarded as one of the finest talents in world football and the 26-year old has been strongly linked with a move to Spanish giants Barcelona in recent weeks and months.

No disrespect to Ribery because I think he is an outstanding player, but do you really think Sir Alex Ferguson would spend £60 million on him? The simple answer to that is no.

Ferguson is not stupid with his money. If it is to be that Cristiano Ronaldo leaves Old Trafford in the summer to join Real Madrid for, lets say, £68 million, United won't just go out and spend the same amount of money on someone else. They will buy two or three very good players and then work from there.

Even Ribery's biggest fan would have to admit he is only worth £40 million max. There is no denying he is a world class player and I am sure a lot of United fans would love to see him arrive during the summer, however I find it impossible to believe that Ferguson would spend such a large amount on a single player.

What do you think? Agree or disagree? Comments below please.
